In common parlance, renunciation is supposed to be a prerequisite for possessing God in our life. This is the standpoint of the Jnana marg (knowledge) which is based upon the concept from Vedanta that three elements hamper our vision for God– worldly desires, fickleness of our mind and the false ego. However, for a Bhakta (Devotee), desires initially help him in getting closer to God and this approach is called desire-bhakti i.e. worshiping God for a particular purpose.
Chapter 7 of Bhagwad Gita firmly declares that Lord makes relevant arrangement to strengthen the faith of the one who sincerely comes to him for any sort of wish-fulfillment. The desires have further been classified as for matetialistic things, for general well being, for spiritual knowledge, and for God Himself. Whatever be the desired objective, the essential element in all the cases is the willingness to totally depend on God’s grace for making it a reality.
In this context, the saints have explained that there are mainly two phases of this journey through which our desires lead us to the Supreme- misery to happiness and then from happiness to bliss. Not having something that I want causes me misery and I work upon for removing that cause. Though it is actually a matter of destiny if I am able to actually acquire it or not yet as said above Lord arranges the things in a manner that would build up my faith. The devotee does his part of labor and then approaches Almighty for seeking blessings to have the desired output. If it is granted, the seeker takes it as a divine grace and feels happy. There may be instances when the expectations fail but the Divinity conditions his mind in a way that he accepts the unfavorable result too as a right thing to have happened. This scenario is referred to as first phase of the journey.
Whenever there is an urge felt for a desire, the intervention of God is sought and the bonding with Him grows stronger every time. Many of the souls halt at this point for their several lives until one gets tired of beseeching Him for just fleeting pleasure. Sensing an inner call to savor God instead of His objects signifies the beginning of second phase. The instinct to dictate a particular state of affairs is replaced by the reflex to accept whatever comes. The seeker’s priorities undergo a change as a desire arises to establish an unselfish contact with Almighty by associating with devout people, studying spiritual literature and doing personal saadhna. In the process, mind progressively acquires the stability and the conduct becomes pure.
Finally a stage comes when the devotee surrenders himself fully to God and the fusion of his ego with Him uncovers the treasure of endless bliss within. Hence, the journey kicked off by our ordinary desires ultimately enables us to attain the Supreme by removing the other two hindrances as well and this is facilitated only through His causeless mercy on us.
